City of Akron Cascade Locks Bikeway, Phase IIA

In 2005, the City of Akron moved forward with the construction of a 4,000 foot extension of the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail from Martin Luther King Freeway to Lock 2 in downtown Akron. This section of bikeway/towpath trail is a unique section of the Ohio and Erie Canal. Although it generally follows the alignment of the canal, much of this section of the canal is completely covered by downtown Akron’s roadways and buildings. The trail consists of a 10 foot wide, ADA-accessible path with two foot shoulders on each side for a total width of 14 feet. Street crossings with the exception of the span over Martin Luther King Freeway, consist of brick and concrete at-grade crossings.

H.R. Gray was retained by the City of Akron to provide construction management services for the project.

A key feature of the project is a 270-foot steel truss bridge over State Route 59. A second bridge – a single span reinforced concrete, allowed for construction of the trail under the highway entrance ramp. Traffic was maintained throughout construction.

The 2,000 foot long asphalt concrete trail includes a 470 foot long reinforced concrete retaining wall and 7,000 square feet of Unilock retaining wall in six locations along the alignment.

The project was constructed under the Ohio Department of Transportation Local Project Administration program and was completed on time and on budget.
