H.R. Gray was retained by the City of Columbus to provide constructability, scheduling, estimating, and full-time on-site management services for the Olentangy Scioto Interceptor Sewer (OSIS) project. The OSIS is a major sewer that serves the western section of Columbus – west of the Olentangy River.
The project included the relocation of an existing 123-inch tunneled sewer and associated sewers to a new location outside of the proposed Nationwide Arena site. Also included was the widening of Nationwide Blvd., construction of new sidewalks, and relocation of utilities. Repositioning of the 123-inch line into Nationwide Blvd., West Street and Maple Street required the construction of two diversionary chambers around the existing line.
One major challenge on this project was that the City of Columbus was under obligation to the National Hockey League to have Nationwide Arena completed for the inaugural season of the Columbus Blue Jackets professional hockey team. To accommodate the Arena schedule, the constructability, design and bid processes were accelerated and materials were pre-purchased. The construction process also had to be accelerated. This was reflected in the project schedule and schedule narrative in the bid documents that H.R. Gray developed.
Extended work hours and second shift work was required. Careful planning and scheduling, timely responses from the design consultant, and on-the-spot resolutions of construction problems by the management team ensured continuing progress of the work and successful completion of the project, ahead of schedule and within budget.
