Ohio University, in collaboration with the State of Ohio, Department of Administrative Services, contracted with H.R. Gray to provide scheduling and on-site schedule reviews for the Bentley Hall project. Built in 1923, the four-story building houses the departments of Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology, together with lecture halls, classrooms of various sizes and seminar rooms.
The contract documents were developed by Moody Nolan of Columbus, Ohio, to renovate an existing classroom/faculty
office building and construct
an adjoining addition connected by a plaza -- the Bentley Annex. Doubling the size
of the original building, the addition added a five-story structure, basement and connecting sub-basement tunnel.
Restricted site conditions as well as an active campus setting presented interesting challenges for site access
and contractor lay-down areas. H.R. Gray, working with Wesam Construction, the lead contractor on the project,
and the other trade contractors developed a detailed construction schedule and narrative which addressed these
site challenges and provided solutions in order to remain on-time and on-budget.
In addition to providing on-site monthly schedule updates and analyses of project progress, H.R. Gray recommended construction approaches that resulted in re-sequencing the phases of the project which lead to an early completion of the project, in May 2003.
