The Harold K. Stubbs Justice Center houses the Akron Police Department and municipal courts. The Center is also a popular tourist attraction as it is the home to the Akron Police Museum, which features historical photos, uniforms and weapons. Other items on display include the keys to the original 1890 jail and a 1965 Harley-Davidson police motorcycle.
In 2007, H.R. Gray was retained to provide construction management services for the City of Akron. The project consisted of removal of the existing and installation of a new HVAC system, removal of and replacement of the fire alarm system, renovation and expansion of the police property room, and emergency repairs to the building façade.
The renovations were undertaken in 2007 to retrofit the original HVAC system since it was experiencing frequent breakdowns. The existing fire alarm system was outdated and did not meet current building code requirements. The building façade consisted of precast concrete cladding, much of which was deteriorated, crumbling and had come loose. Loose concrete was removed and the panels were secured in place.
Since the building is occupied 24/7, H.R. Gray managed the construction to permit the building’s round-the-clock operations to remain undisturbed. All construction was completed in phases and at night when the courts were not in session to alleviate interruptions to courtrooms and the ongoing police operations.
Please contact H.R. Gray for additional information pertaining to any of our services.
